Catholic granite memorials combine granite construction with Christian elements such as the cross and a clearly organized headstone. At KANNO, KNC02, KNC03 and KNC04 are current examples using Indian Black Granite with a Polished finish.
What defines a Catholic granite memorial?
A Catholic memorial should be designed as a complete composition rather than taking a generic monument and adding a cross at the end. The cross, headstone, overall height, front clearance and stone tiers should be proportioned together from the drawings.
Key design characteristics
The cross as a primary element
The cross is typically the main religious identifier and should be integrated with the headstone or rear composition.
A clear upright headstone zone
The headstone needs sufficient area for the name, dates, portrait where used and family-selected wording. Text hierarchy and edge clearances should be reviewed before engraving.
Restrained granite massing
Granite works well with flat planes, defined edges and contemporary forms, allowing the cross and inscription to remain visually clear without excessive ornament.

Reference dimensions
| Model | Dimensions | Material | Finish |
|---|---|---|---|
| KNC02 | 1270 × 2550 × 2320 mm | Indian Black Granite | Polished |
| KNC03 | 1600 × 2650 × 2370 mm | Indian Black Granite | Polished |
| KNC04 | 1270 × 2320 × 2320 mm | Indian Black Granite | Polished |
These are product reference dimensions, not universal standards. All three exceed the 810 mm compact-width group used by KANNO for many reburial/cremation products and therefore sit within KANNO’s larger in-ground burial group. Actual burial construction must still be checked from the site.
Why use Indian Black Granite?
The dark stone creates strong contrast with lettering and crosses and works well with restrained memorial forms. The quotation should identify the exact stone, component thickness and finish rather than using only the generic label “black granite.”
Cross and headstone proportion
The cross should be treated as part of the overall design. On larger memorials, its height and width need to balance with the body length and headstone. The inscription layout should also be approved before fabrication.
Catholic memorials within a family complex
Where several Catholic memorials share one plot, consistency in headstone height, cross proportion, granite and surface finish helps the site read as one coherent composition. Mixed burial types may require careful handling of size differences between compact and larger memorials.
How to choose a Catholic granite memorial
- Confirm the burial method.
- Measure the grave opening, plot and setbacks.
- Choose an appropriate cross and headstone proportion.
- Use KNC02, KNC03 or KNC04 as references, or develop a custom design.
- Select granite, color and finish.
- Check transport and lifting conditions for larger components.
- Approve drawings, inscription and material specification before fabrication.
