In-Ground Burial Grave Dimensions – How to Plan the Complete Construction

In-ground burial grave dimensions should be developed from the inside outward: coffin dimensions, working clearance, grave opening or internal structure, ground conditions and finally the finished memorial above ground. One online number cannot be applied safely to every burial site.

Three different dimension groups

Dimension Meaning
Coffin / burial container The physical item that must fit within the burial construction.
Grave opening / internal chamber The below-ground excavation or built space, including technical clearance and wall thickness.
Finished memorial footprint The visible base, body, headstone, steps and surrounding usable space.

Planning sequence

  1. Measure the actual coffin or approved burial construction.
  2. Allow realistic working clearance for lowering and installation.
  3. Define the internal wall or chamber construction.
  4. Check soil, groundwater, drainage and finished levels.
  5. Check cemetery dimensional rules.
  6. Only then finalize the visible memorial footprint and headstone.

Why the finished memorial can be larger

The above-ground monument needs enough footprint for the base and structural support, and it must leave practical clearance from adjacent graves, paths and boundaries. The visible size therefore cannot be derived from the coffin dimension alone.

Traditional dimension references

Some Vietnamese families compare feasible dimensions with the Lỗ Ban ruler. This is a cultural reference. The technical range should be established first; then the family can check traditional intervals if desired. See the KANNO Lỗ Ban ruler.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Coffin size, internal construction, soil, cemetery rules and plot constraints can differ.

No. They are related but separate dimension groups.

No. Establish a technically feasible range first, then use traditional references if the family wishes.
